This case study outlines BDO’s implementation of Microsoft Dynamics GP for Desire2Learn Inc.
Founded in 1999, Desire2Learn Incorporated (D2L) is a leader in innovative eLearning solutions for academic and other organizations around the world. D2L is known for its focus on research and development, as well as client service and support.
D2L’s rapid growth means they had outgrown Simply Accounting for some time. This left the company with a myriad of Excel spreadsheets and manual processes to track contract invoicing, deferred revenue, revenue recognition and fixed assets. D2L also had demanding requirements for management reporting information that its current system was not able to handle. Furthermore, D2L has global operations and consolidated financial statements in Canadian dollars were being produced manually in Excel on a quarterly basis.
BDO implemented Microsoft Dynamics GP, providing a fully integrated system including a robust and flexible Contract Administration module that handles revenue deferral, revenue recognition and recurring billing and more. Some other benefits include:
- Contract data is entered only once and all revenue deferrals/recognition and recurring billing are easily driven from this module
- Expenses can be recorded to client markets and to specific initiatives to facilitate management reporting without requiring an expanded formal chart of accounts
- Translated financial statements can be produced at any time in FRx with the click of a button eOne’s SmartConnect facilitates the automation of payables and expense entry, allowing the finance team to focus on other accounting tasks and analysis
- Users have tremendous reporting flexibility to view and interact with system data within GP in the form of inquiries, reports and lists, as well as outside GP in Excel or via SRS reports
